Born in Faenza in 1954, Roberto Cimatti studied at the DAMS in Bologna and began his career in 1979 as a first assistant camera, later working as a second assistant camera. He made his debut as a camera operator with Roberto Meddi. During his training and early career, he worked with leading cinematographers including Franco Di Giacomo, Pasquale Rachini, Gualtiero Manozzi, Gianfranco Transunto, Agostino Castiglioni, Blasco Giurato, Franco Delli Colli, Roberto D’Ettorre Piazzoli, Giuseppe Lanci, Alessio Gelsini Torresi, Alessandro Pesci, Italo Petriccione and Pasquale Mari.

Since 1989 he has worked as cinematographer on feature films, television series and documentaries. His most significant collaborations include Giorgio Diritti on Il vento fa il suo giro, L’uomo che verrà and Un giorno devi andare; Giuseppe Piccioni on Il rosso e il blu; Amir Naderi on Monte; and Carmine Elia on La porta rossa, Mare fuori and Sopravvissuti. As cinematographer, he has also worked with Roberto Andò, Giuseppe Bertolucci, Marco Turco and Anna Di Francisca, developing a visual language rooted in places, faces and natural light. From 2000 to 2023 he was a member of AIC — the Italian Association of Cinematographers; since 2024 he has been a member of CCS — Collettivo Chiaroscuro.
